New Generation 900 94-98
The second or ‘new’ generation Saab 900 (also referred to as the GM900 or NG900 among enthusiasts) was built on GM’s Opel9-3 Vectra platform as a replacement for the ‘Classic’ first generation Saab 900. This all-new 900 was produced in 1994 through to 1998 model years. In mid 1998 it received over 1100 individual improvements (although some were actually introduced on the 1998 model 900) and was renamed the Saab 9-3 (in most markets; in the US the name change was introduced for 1999). As the 9-3, the NG900 was produced through 2002. Variants included 900i (four-cylinder, non-Turbo), S (fourcylinder,non-Turbo) and SE (four-cylinder Turbo or V6) models in three-door, five-door and Convertible body styles. For 1997 and 1998 only, there was also a special edition ‘Talladega’ model after a record-breaking endurance test in 1996, on the Talladega racetrack. Depending on market, the NG900 was available with a choice of 2.0l or 2.3l Saab 16-valve DOHC engines (Saab engine codes B204, B234) in naturally aspirated or turbocharged form (2.0l only), as well as a 2.5l version of GM’s European 54 V6 engine. Engine management for the Turbos was by Saab Trionic 5 with Direct Ignition (SDI) and Automatic Performance Control, and for non-Turbos by Bosch Motronic fuel injection. A distributoroperated ignition system was provided for naturally aspirated engines in some markets. However, in contrast to the ‘Classic’ Saab 900 with its longitudinally mounted engine and fronthinged hood (bonnet), the NG900 had a more-common transversely mounted engine with rear-hinged hood (bonnet).

Sensonic Model The ‘Sensonic’ clutch variant, (available on Turbo models only) provided a manual gear lever as in a standard manual transmission car, but omitted the clutch pedal in favour of electronics which could control the clutch faster than an average driver.

When I was touring around Trollhattan last month, one of my first stops was at ANA Specialbilar. There are two main facilities here, the recycling center (formerly SDCC) where they take cars to bits and then there's the custom shop where they do a lot of special builds for various companies and agencies.

Alf and Martin were kind enough to give me a look through a SwedishPoliscar. I'm such an exemplary citizen that my chances to see inside one the way some people to do are pretty limited :-)

The cars come to ANA like this - plain white Saab 9-5 wagons.

Introducing the Mayo P1. It's a custom built car based on the mechanicals of a Saab 9000 by a guy named Leif Mellberg.

Sonett I.II.V4, IIIAll models of the SAAB Sonett are catered for by the SAAB Owners Club. The Sonett is the least well known and recognised SAAB, with relatively low production numbers.

The first Sonett (Designated the SAAB 94) was really only a prototype, with 6 cars built between 1955 and 1957.

Ebor Saab Scottish Mystery Weekend May 2019

ebor saab scottish mystery weekend may 2019 1 20190529 190050204414 Ebor Saab members set off on Friday 10 May to make their separate ways to the assembly point at Gretna Green for what was billed as a Scottish Mystery Weekend, the mystery being only the organisers knew the itinerary. The mystery began to unfold on Saturday morning with a drive along gloriously empty roads under blue skies up into rural Scotland to visit the Kagyu Samye Ling Tibetan Temple at Eskdalemuir (nobody expected a visit the foothills of the Himalayas).

North of Scotland

There is no formal Branch currently in operation (largely as a result of the sheer geographical spread of members across this area) and therefore no regular meetings.
Where possible, there is usually an  SOC 'presence' at gatherings across the region organised by other clubs, motor museums or advertised on web forums (principally UKSaabs).

The dates known so far for 2020 at which we aim to be represented are:

  • 26th Apr           FBHVC 'Drive It Day' 2020  - various local runs (I'll be attending the one organised by the Highland Classic Motor Club, Inverness)
  • 9th May            Inverness Classic Vehicle Show - on the streets of Inverness with Parade finale led by pipe band
  • 10th May         Grampian Transport Museum, Alford, Aberdeenshire - "How Many Left" event for 'nearly classic' vehicles with fewer than 500 examples on the road
  • 23rd May         Rotary Club of East Sutherland Classic Car Tour, Dornoch
  • 11/12th Jul      46th Scottish Transport Extravaganza, Glamis Castle, Angus (see UKSaabs forum for details)
  • 9th Aug            Historic Wheels Vintage Car Rally, Brodie Castle, Morayshire
  • 31st Aug          Fortrose & Rosemarkie Classic Vehicle Rally, Fortrose, Ross-shire.
  • 6th Sept           Motor Mania, Grantown on Spey.
  • 19th Sept         'Wheels of Nairn', Nairn Links
  • Early Dec          Joint SOC/UKSaabs Christmas Gathering - date and venue TBC (see UKSaabs forum for details)
